Prepare for a Japanese driver’s license in 2026 with driving lessons, written test study, and license conversion guidance.

Getting a driver’s license in Japan can feel overwhelming, especially when the rules, paperwork, and test instructions are unfamiliar. Good preparation makes the process easier to understand, whether you are learning to drive for the first time or bringing years of experience from another country.
At Asia Driving School, we help foreign residents prepare for the steps ahead with practical lessons, written test preparation, and guidance on license conversion.
Applying for your first Japanese license and converting an existing foreign license are different processes. Before booking lessons or an exam, confirm which route applies to you and which requirements you need to meet.
If you are starting from the beginning, your preparation should cover both traffic rules and practical driving skills. If you already hold a foreign license, check your eligibility for conversion before choosing a training plan.
Changes introduced on October 1, 2025 remain relevant to applicants in 2026. Where a knowledge check is required, it now contains 50 written questions, with at least 45 correct answers needed to pass. Residence verification and practical assessment standards were also tightened. See the Chiba Police explanation of the changes.
These are changes to foreign license conversion, not a single new test that every applicant takes. Exemptions can depend on the country or region that issued your license. Confirm your own requirements with the licensing authority where you live.
Experience behind the wheel is valuable, but it does not replace familiarity with Japanese traffic rules and assessment procedures. During practice, focus on making safe decisions consistently, rather than memorizing a sequence of movements.
Lessons give you a chance to identify habits that need attention and practice with feedback. If you are unsure how a session works, read our guide to your first driving lesson in Japan.
Written questions can be challenging when the wording is unfamiliar. Study road signs, priority rules, safe stopping, and how to respond to common traffic situations. When you get a practice question wrong, work through the reason before trying again.
Use study material that matches your application route. The foreign license conversion knowledge check and the examinations for a new license are different. Ask your licensing center which test languages and reservation arrangements are available.
For foreign license conversion, you generally need a valid foreign license and evidence that you stayed in the issuing country or region for a total of at least three months after obtaining it. Review the National Police Agency’s conversion guidance before gathering your documents.
The issuing authority, license history, supporting records, and local procedures can affect what you need to submit. Do not assume that another applicant’s checklist will fit your circumstances. Our Saitama license conversion guide explains where to start.
Asia Driving School can help with written test study, practical driving lessons, understanding Japanese traffic rules, and preparing for the license conversion process. We work with you to identify the areas that need more practice and explain the next steps clearly.
Work and family commitments matter too. Tell us about your availability so we can discuss suitable lesson times. Ask about transportation support, which depends on availability and your arrangements.
You do not have to understand everything before you begin. Contact Asia Driving School to discuss your current license, experience, and goals. We can help you prepare your paperwork and your lessons, one step at a time.
